CIO Council will fund eight e-gov portal projects

The Chief Information Officers Council this month announced that its electronic-government committee has approved $1.2 million to fund eight cross-agency Web portals.

The committee received 17 proposals and chose eight based on their potential public benefit, innovation, transferability, number of participating agencies, ease of implementation, strength of government and public support, cost efficiency and privacy protection.

The funding for each project varies:

  • Service locator and portal builder tool for existing portals Seniors.gov and Students.gov: $500,000

  • Housing and Urban Development's Virtual Home Center: $225,000

  • New service portal for low-income citizens: $200,000

  • MapStats for Kids: $90,000

  • Science.gov Web Search: $90,000

  • Science.gov interagency database browse function: $85,000

  • Volunteer service portals to benefit land management agencies: $10,000.
