Hackers mix it up at Los Alamos chemistry site

Hackers defaced an unclassified Web server on the publicly accessible network at Los Alamos National Laboratory during the weekend of Aug. 11.

The server was on the so-called green network, which contains no sensitive material, said Chris Kemper, deputy director of the Los Alamos, N.M., lab's Computing, Communications and Networking Division.

Los Alamos officials took down the server to fix the problem, which may have resulted from a vulnerability in its Microsoft Internet Information Server software, Kemper said. The lab's internal network was not affected.

The hacked server belongs to the Los Alamos applied chemical technology group.
