A host-independent, disk-based storage appliance uses an Ultra 160 SCSI channel to link enterprise networks to RAID Level 5 storage on 16-bit ATA drives.
The ATAboy from Nexsan Technologies of Woodland Hills, Calif., does not require any special server drivers, said Diamond Lauffin, the company's senior executive vice president.
Lauffin said Linux, Unix, Microsoft Windows or Mac OS platforms will automatically recognize the ATAboy, and it is compatible with storage area network uses.
14 drives comingNexsan Technologies is now selling eight-drive units and will release a 14-drive version this fall, Lauffin said.
The ATAboy comes in rackmount, stackable or tower models. In a 'rackless stackable' version, up to 12 units can be stacked to save floor space, with cases interlocked for safety.
A 640G ATAboy appliance costs about $7,200, Lauffin said.
