VA rolls out enterprise

The Veterans Affairs Department last week released its plan for the One VA Enterprise architecture. Once implemented, veterans will have to register with the department only once, and information will be available to authorized users in real time. The department envisions better sharing and use of information with the Social Security Administration, Defense Department, Health and Human Services Department, and federal, state and local governments.

VA does not have the staff in-house to implement the architecture, said John A. Gauss, assistant secretary for information and technology, so it will hire contractors and have up to 60 percent nongovernment staff on board.

All legacy systems will adhere to the architecture, Gauss said. The department plans to use commercial software wherever possible, he said, adding that there was no date yet on when the request for proposals on any work will be issued.
