FEMA plans to connect worlds of data

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is seeking proposals, due Nov. 21, for a mapping interoperability framework to combine spatial data from federal, state and local storehouses on the fly via the Web.

The maps would be georeferenced by the contributing Web map servers, with each pixel corresponding to a specific ground coordinate on the Earth. The maps need not come from the same server or the same mapping application.

Scott McAfee, FEMA's geographic information systems coordinator, said the Multihazard Mapping Initiative at first will cover only natural hazards such as floods and hurricanes because of the government's 'concern about making critical infrastructure data publicly available,' he said.
