Speaking at the Comdex trade show in Las Vegas last week, Microsoft Corp. chairman Bill Gates predicted a very different computing and networking landscape within five years.
His vision for what he called the upcoming "digital decade" would put trustworthy systems at the core of all networks.
Gates predicted tablet computers will outpace desktop and notebook PC sales within the next five years, and he demonstrated several vendors' tablets running Office XP that will be available by next year.
"The PC took computing out of the back office and into everyone's office," he said. "The tablet makes cutting-edge PC technology available wherever you want it, which is why I'm already using a tablet as my everyday computer. Within five years it will be the most popular form of PC sold in America."
