Calif. integrates state workers' benefits info

The California Public Employees Retirement System is integrating multiple portals to accept a single sign-on from each of 1.2 million former and current state employees who receive retirement and health benefits.

With $144 billion in assets, CalPERS is the nation's largest public pension fund, CIO Jack Corrie said.

To provide more self-service features, Corrie and his team used the Oracle9i application server. Oracle9i InterConnect 4.0 middleware integrated the data residing on mainframes, saving 30 percent to 40 percent in potential systems integration costs, Corrie said.

Until now, CalPERS has estimated employees' retirement benefits using calculators and paper. 'We could calculate maybe 1,000 estimates a month, and because it was so time-consuming, we had a requirement that an employee had to be 45 or older before we would estimate,' Corrie said.

'Now we're doing 30,000 estimates a month.'
