Procurement apps will reach more stored data

Government procurement applications from American Management Systems Inc. are gaining a data integration platform to access more types of stored data.

Procurement Desktop Defense is one of several AMS applications that use middleware from webMethods Inc. to connect users to other systems, said Michael Dow, vice president of AMS' federal defense group. Both AMS and webMethods are located in Fairfax, Va.

The Defense Department's Standard Procurement System uses the AMS procurement desktop, Dow said. AMS is almost halfway through a 10-year contract to roll out SPS for DOD.

AMS for about two years has embedded webMethods' middleware into its government financial management applications, Federal Financial System and Momentum, Dow said.

Al Fox, webMethods' director of public-sector operations, said the combination would let contracting and procurement officials manage acquisitions from initial request to contract closeout without handling paper.
