IG report calls IRS' tracking of its PCs shoddy

The IRS cannot account for an unknown number of the 6,600 desktop and notebook computers it has loaned to volunteers who help low-income, disabled and senior citizens prepare tax returns, an audit has found.

The agency also did not ensure that taxpayer data, such as Social Security numbers, had been removed from the computers at the end of the 2001 tax season, the Treasury Department's inspector general for tax administration said in a report released this month.

The IRS said it agreed with the IG's findings and would take steps to ensure that no further computers disappear.
