Unisys debuts storage management in a box

Storage Sentinel, a storage management bundle from Unisys Corp., includes storage virtualization software, controllers, switches and a RAID hardware cabinet.

Agencies that have several independent storage systems often cannot get a single view of how much storage is available, said Bill Jefferis, the company's director of storage management products. Surveys have found that only 40 percent to 60 percent of large-scale storage capacity is actually used, he said.

'You could get away with that when you had a deep pocket,' Jefferis said.

The Storage Sentinel cabinet has dual storage controller servers, dual 16-port Fibre Channel switches from Brocade Communications Systems Inc. of San Jose, Calif., and an Ethernet switch, said Jim Thompson, engineering director for Storage Sentinel. The cabinet also incorporates a 1.8T disk array for temporary storage.

An LCD and keyboard and mouse connections make local management possible, but the storage system also can be remotely administered through a browser interface. All the Storage Sentinel software is wizard-driven for ease of use, Thompson said.

Road map services

New users get one to three weeks of so-called road map services from Unisys storage specialists, Jefferis said. The specialists also help with rollout and maintenance.

Unisys tested Storage Sentinel with hardware from partner EMC Corp. of Hopkinton, Mass., but the product also manages other vendors'hardware, Thompson said.

Storage Sentinel is compatible with Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 2000, Linux and Sun Solaris server operating systems.

An average implementation of Storage Sentinel costs about $200,000, Jefferis said. That includes about $150,000 for the hardware and software plus $50,000 for implementation and support services.
