The FBI has fielded biometric identification systems to capture, catalog and check the fingerprints and photographs of suspected Al Qaeda terrorists detained in Afghanistan and at the Navy's Guantanamo Bay base
The bureau has chosen the ID 1000 Live Scan identification system from Cross Match Technologies Inc. of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
'The [identification] systems were purchased initially for the terrorist identification efforts in Afghanistan and have since been used for that purpose in Guantanamo Bay,' said John Manzo of FBI's Criminal Justice Information Services Division in a statement.
The system can handle 10-print scans and transmit the files via telephone lines or satellite links to FBI fingerprint analysis facilities in the United States. The FBI then runs matches of the prints against its Integrated Automatic Fingerprint Identification System and the National Crime Information Center.
