IBM Z990 eServer
IBM Corp. has given its high-end mainframe server a modular architecture and virtualization technology to handle up to 30 logical partitions.
The 32-way IBM z990 eServer replaces the 16-way z900, said Pete McCaffrey, IBM's zSeries marketing director. The new server comes with one to four eight-processor modules, but buyers can pay for turning on fewer than eight CPUs in a module.
On-off capacity on demand lets users put CPUs online temporarily to handle workload spikes, McCaffrey said.
The z990 has up to 256G of memory and IBM's 64-bit CMOS95-SOI CPUs with superscalar technology to execute multiple instructions per clock cycle.
