Opti Scroll Mouse

Quick look: Minimouse for use with notebook PCs

Don't you hate the touch pads most notebooks have for a navigation tool? And those tiny eraser tip joysticks are even worse. For most travelers, the only alternative is to carry a mouse with them in their computer bag. But mice are rather large and can take up valuable real estate inside cramped quarters.

The Fellowes Opti Scroll mouse from Fellowes Inc. of Itasca, Ill., is designed to be portable. It is less than half the size of a normal mouse, yet has some innovative features that to my knowledge have never been put into a mouse this small. All the features seem to be designed with the traveler in mind.

First off, the Opti Scroll is a laser mouse, so there are no moving parts to clog and you can use it anywhere, even without a proper surface. It even works scrolling across your pants. And because it's tiny, it can fit on an airplane tray table.

The mouse also has an interesting input device itself. Instead of a scroll wheel, there is a little red button where you rest your finger, sitting in the middle of the two main input buttons. The tiny red pad acts like a joystick with eight directions, which lets you scroll around the screen without using the mouse if you like.

Both an advantage and a disadvantage is the fact that the mouse plugs into a standard PS/2 port. This means that it will work with any notebook or operating system, even older ones that might not have Universal Serial Bus ports or support. But it also means that you will need to install the drivers for the mouse onto every computer you plan to use with it.

Its size is a great advantage, but it can also be a negative for some people. If you have large hands, you are going to have some trouble using the mouse, or at least getting used to it. Other than that, the minimouse makes the perfect traveling companion.
