DOD EMall's next upgrade is Web services

The Defense Department's procurement Web portal will incorporate Web services in a future upgrade, said Donald O'Brien, program manager for the Defense Logistics Agency's EMall.

Web services refer to a set of software specifications, including Extensible Markup Language, by which computer applications can talk to one other.

DLA wants EMall, at https://emall.prod.dodonline.net, to have a service-oriented architecture, O'Brien said earlier this month during a panel discussion at E-Gov 2003 in Washington.

He added that he hoped the buffed-up EMall would encourage a cascade effect, with suppliers and manufacturers adding Web services to their catalogs, too.
