Army help desk can now click to find assets

By year's end, Fort Monmouth, N.J., will upgrade to the latest version of an asset management product that IT administrators can consult via the Web.

The Army site has been running PatchView for the Enterprise 2.51 on three help desk computers for the past two years. It will upgrade to PatchView 3.0 under a $3,000 follow-on contract with RiT Technologies Ltd. of Tel Aviv, Israel.

When users call the six-person help desk, PatchView automatically identifies each one's location, PC and port connections. It shaves the discovery process down to a brief database search, said Charles A. Jones, a senior engineer at the base.

PatchView 2.51 had to be loaded onto each help desk unit separately. With the Web-based Version 3.0, workers can log in through any Web browser. Also, more users can access it simultaneously.
