Redax for PDF gets files ready for FOIA

A plug-in redaction tool for Adobe Portable Document Format documents runs inside Adobe Acrobat 6.0 and 5.0 to fulfill Freedom of Information Act and other privacy regulations.

With Appligent Redax 3.5, users can mark up documents to eliminate specific text or pictures and assign a code to each redaction explaining the reason, said Virginia Gavin, president of Appligent Inc. of Lansdowne, Pa.

The software replaces text with blank space or gibberish, and it substitutes white or black pixels for images.

Redax users also can choose to highlight, underline or strike out text to be deleted, Gavin said. Another feature preserves the original bookmarks in PDF documents.

FOIA and other exception codes appear in place of the redacted text, Gavin said. Agencies can redact multiple versions of the same document to comply with different regulations.

Redax 3.5 lists for $349 per user with a 25 percent government discount.
