NMCI users get new audio and video appliances

The Navy-Marine Corps Intranet's lead contractor, EDS Corp., earlier this month certified the VCON ViGO personal desktop videoconferencing appliance as the first visual communications device for NMCI.

The appliance passed rigorous interoperability testing with gateways, multipoint control units and other H.323-compliant conferencing equipment before being selected, said Gordon Daugherty, president of VCON of Austin, Texas.

The portable, Universal Serial Bus-connected appliance has a detachable video camera and speaker tower. It can support audio- and videoconferences from either notebook or desktop PCs over IP networks at data rates up to 1.5 Mbps. The device includes vClip, a video e-mail program for recording and sending voice and video messages.
