Project Leopard will hit the spot for Linux users

An open-source framework for Web services on Linux platforms is under construction at leopard.sourceforge.net.

Project Leopard is based on LAMP, an acronym for the combination of Linux, Apache Web Server, the MySQL open-source database and a scripting language'PHP, Perl or Python.

Project Leopard eventually will have a downloadable library of 160 open-source applications that agencies can customize, said John Weathersby, director of the Open Source Software Institute of Oxford, Miss.

The initial programs are for state and local real-estate tax and law-enforcement agencies, but eventually components will be available for federal applications.

The LAMP downloads are free.
