The appeal of rock music can be infectious. That's what fans of the String Cheese Incident found out last summer when the hepatitis A virus broke out following the band's June 19 concert in Telluride, Colo.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention activated its Epidemic Information Exchange system to gather reports of similar concert-related hepatitis A breakouts. Epi-X is a secure network for sharing public-health information among health agencies . CDC issued the band's itinerary through Epi-X, so public-health officials could prepare preventative measures and offer public education.

The band cooperated by posting a notice on its Web site and inviting CDC staff to investigate at its other concerts. By the end of the summer, Epi-X had tracked 26 cases in 10 states.
