John Thomas Flynn, the first CIO for Massachusetts and California, is vying for a congressional seat representing California's 5th District.
Flynn announced last month that he will run for the seat formerly held by Rep. Robert Matsui (D-Calif.), who died suddenly Jan. 1 of pneumonia complicated by a rare blood disorder.
The 55-year-old Republican businessman joins a crowded field of 12 candidates who are pursuing the open seat, which represents the state capital of Sacramento. A special election is slated for March 8.
'My background in business and government has prepared me to be an effective representative in Congress,' Flynn said. He details his positions on a
campaign Web site.
Currently, Flynn is vice president of advisory services for the Center for Digital Government, an IT research institute in Folsom, Calif. A past president of the National Association of State CIOs, Flynn was CIO of Massachusetts from 1993 to 1995 and of California from 1996 to 1999.
