Hobbins to become new AF CIO

Lt. Gen. William T. 'Tom' Hobbins is going to be nominated as the next CIO of the Air Force, following the reorganization of several offices, a Pentagon spokeswoman confirmed today.
Maj. Barb Carson said that Hobbins, currently the deputy chief of staff for warfighting integration, will become the new head of the merged CIO, warfighting integration and communications operations directorate.
'I believe we are waiting for Senate confirmation,' Carson said.
Hobbins will take the reins on Tuesday, the day current CIO John Gilligan steps down and the new organization goes into effect.
The consolidation of the three functions was announced in December by then-secretary of the Air Force James Roche, who said the leadership position would be filled by a three-star general. Hobbins was reported to be a leading candidate when Gilligan
announced his plans to resign.
Hobbins entered the Air Force in 1969 as a graduate of Officer Training School. He completed numerous assignments overseas, including director of plans and operations for U.S. Forces Japan and director of aerospace operations at the Air Force headquarters in Ramstein, Germany. He was commander of the 12th Air Force and U.S. Southern Command Air Forces at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona before returning to Washington in 2003 for his current posting.
Hobbins has a bachelor's degree in business finance from the University of Colorado and an M.B.A. from Troy State University.
