Allume Personal Image Manager

Digital photos are becoming as much a part of life as e-mail or cell phones. Everyone seems to have a digital camera, or be thinking about getting one. Presentations are greatly enhanced if you can work in a digital photo or two to illustrate a point.

But digital images don't jump off the camera ready to go. Depending on how you intend to use them, they have to be processed to some extent. For example, sometimes there is too little or too much light in the image. Or the resolution can be so high that the image can't be easily e-mailed, or the image too large to post on a Web site without slowing the page-load time.

Professionals use Adobe Photoshop, a program that is expensive and very complicated to learn. If you just process photos once in a while, you are probably looking for a program that costs less and is easy to learn.

Personal Image Manager from Allume Systems Inc. of Watsonville, Calif., is just that. It's an extremely easy-to-use photo manager with a surprisingly powerful toolset.

When you attach your camera to the computer, you can use Image Manager to pull photos off. Once they are on your computer, you can edit them using simple button clicks.

There are a lot of things you can do with single clicks, such as reducing 'red eye' caused by the flash. You can also automatically enhance the color and contrast, or experiment with colors and try to fix the image by hand. Cropping and resizing photos is also simple with Image Manager.

If you want to get really fancy, you can add a virtual layer over the photo. You can draw on this layer or add clip art, then save it as part of the photo.

When you are finished, you can save your picture into useful formats such as jpeg, gif, bmp or tiff.
