The Senate has confirmed former Raytheon Co. vice president John G. Grimes as the Defense Department's new CIO, filling a position that had been without a permanent IT leader for more than 1 1/2 years.

Grimes is a former vice president of Raytheon Intelligence and Information Systems in Washington.

He previously served as deputy assistant secretary for counterintelligence and security countermeasures at Defense and held the title of deputy assistant secretary for Defense-wide command, control and communications.

The Senate also confirmed several other Defense positions, including:
  • Michael W. Wynne as Air Force secretary. Wynne formerly worked as principal deputy undersecretary of Defense for acquisition, technology and logistics.

  • Delores M. Etter as the Navy's assistant secretary of research, development and acquisition. Previously, Etter was a U.S. Naval Academy professor.

  • John J. Young Jr. as director of Defense Research and Engineering. Young was the Navy's assistant secretary for research, development and acquisition.

  • William Anderson as assistant secretary of the Air Force for installations and environment.

President Bush has nominated disaster management veteran George W. Foresman as the Homeland Security Department's undersecretary for preparedness.

Foresman, who for 20 years has held senior management and operational jobs in emergency management for Virginia, currently is assistant to the governor for common- wealth preparedness after previously serving as deputy. He joined the state government in 1985.

Matt Miszewski, Wisconsin's CIO, has been elected 2005-06 president of the National Association of State Chief Information Officers.

The membership also elected Michigan CIO Teresa Takai as vice president and Nevada CIO Terry Savage as secretary/treasurer.
