Servers with more memory
Server builder Appro International Inc., of Milpitas, Calif., has introduced a line of 1U and 3U servers based on single-or dual-core AMD Opteron processors. The XtremeServer machines can hold up to an impressive 64GB (1U) or 128GB (3U) of on-board memory, thanks to the eight memory slots per CPU socket, twice the norm. "The market has been clamoring for more memory-per-system," said John Lee, Appro product market director. Other features include remote management capability, easy-to-use slide rails, color-coded components and a board that subsumes many of the cables. Agencies might want to consider 1Us for dense supercomputing clusters, and 3Us for intense graphics applications.
