Microsoft aims at Lotus

Microsoft Corp. last month took the wraps off a slew of new and upgraded tools it hopes will help Lotus Notes users migrate to its own collaboration platform.

Among the most notable tools are the Application Analyzer 2006 for Lotus Domino, which is due this quarter and helps users identify ways of moving Domino apps to Microsoft, and the Data Migrator 2006 for Domino, due next quarter and capable of actually shifting data from Domino template-based applications to Windows SharePoint Services.

Microsoft also added new SharePoint Application Templates to the 30 or so it released last August, and brushed up its toolset for transitioning enterprises from Notes to Exchange Server. All are free to download.

What's the goody bag missing? There's no way, so far, to migrate custom-built Domino apps. Domino is widely regarded as a strong development environment.
