PC instead of IP phone?

Tech brief

Psytechnics Ltd., a British company specializing in video and voice quality assessment, has reported that combining a prototype Microsoft USB handset and a pre-release version of Office Communicator 2007 results voice communications clear enough that many organizations won't need more-expensive IP phones.

'Users have been cautious about PC desktop telephony, but our tests show that concerns about speech quality have now been addressed by software,' said Mike Hollier, chief technical officer for Psytechnics. 'The familiar PC can now outperform the IP phone.'
