Sun launches data center initiative

GCN Insider | Sun Microsystems has suite of programs, services to help IT managers construct more energy-efficient data centers

Sun Microsystems has unveiled a suite of programs and services intended to help information technology managers construct more energy-efficient data centers using state-of-the art power-saving technologies.

The company also unveiled three new data centers ' in Santa Clara, Calif.; Blackwater, United Kingdom; and Bangalore, India ' that company officials said were built using innovative designs and energy-efficient systems.
Some of those best practices and technology innovations could be applied to government and commercial facilities, said Mark Monroe, director of sustainable computing at Sun.

To help IT managers create more eco-efficient data centers, Sun is offering three Eco Ready Kits ' the Sun Eco Assessment, Sun Eco Optimization and Sun Eco Virtualization kits.

The Assessment Kit provides a methodical approach to analyzing data center energy efficiency, using a combination of assessment services for systems, storage and data center infrastructure.

The Optimization Kit helps users consolidate, refresh and recycle their hardware infrastructure by taking advantage of special offers on Sun systems, storage and services.

The Virtualization Kit helps users better utilize data center resources.
The core of the offering is the Sun Solaris 10 operating system, including Solaris Containers that let managers consolidate applications onto fewer servers by securely running multiple applications on a single system, Sun officials said.

For those who think this is an example to be emulated, there's other encouraging news. IBM announced plans in June to build a green data center at its Boulder, Colo., facility. IBM will invest $86 million to expand the building by 80,000 square feet and deploy its Cool Blue portfolio of energy-efficient power and cooling technologies.
