If leaders are made, not born, it's worth noting the paths that GCN's executives of the year took to get where they are today. You'll find their stories inside this gatefold.
John Johnson spent more than two decades as a customer of the General Services Administration's supply programs before getting the chance to take charge of those programs. His experience on the other side of the counter has informed the way he runs the shop. Kevin Carroll started in the Transportation Department before beginning his long ascendance through the ranks of the Defense Department. Marine Gen. James Cartwright proved himself in several difficult commands before becoming vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs. And Diana Gowen gained experience at AT&T and MCI before leading Qwest Communications' charge into the federal telecom sector.
But while learning the ropes, they learned not to fall back on standard operating procedures, instead striving for innovation and finding ways to inspire others to follow their lead.
The same could also be said of this year's GCN Hall of Fame inductees, Ira Hobbs and Steve Kelman.
