In government, everyone is a specialist in some field or other. But when communicating your expertise to the outside world, it is important to make what you know as easy to understand and as free of jargon as possible. A group of volunteers from government agencies even banded together to create a Web site, plainlanguage.gov, devoted to helping fight bureaucratese on agency Web sites.

One site whose creators have taken this to heart is Cancer. gov, managed by the National Cancer Institute.

'The developers attend to the principles of plain language,' Haller said. In the last ACSI survey, it garnered a score of 80, the threshold for what ForeSee calls superior. The site includes descriptions of what cancer is, how to prevent it, how to treat it, and how to screen for it ' all of it in simple, easy-to-understand language. 'Cancer is a term used for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and are able to invade other tissues,' the site states. Its explanations for the various types of cancer, such as lung cancer or breast cancer, are organized by name or where they can be found in the body. For someone for whom cancer has become an issue, Cancer.gov can be a welcome, and even life-saving, start.
