Domenico Palombo, 32, appreciates the importance of engineering. And so apparently does the U.S. Peace Corps. Palombo caught the agency's attention as the lead engineer for its Global Network Operations ' and for his work as a Peace Corps volunteer in St. Vincent and the Grenadines from 1999-2002. While volunteering, he helped establish the St. Vincent Institute of Technology.

Now as acting chief of Global Operations, Palombo is responsible for managing Peace Corps networks and telecommunications in more than 70 countries around the world ' including network security, Voice Over IP Services, VSAT Satellite services, satellite phones, telephone systems, and wireless services. His latest projects are: The deployment of satellite communication services to over 21 countries, providing much needed bandwidth to locations where it had not previously been available; and a new unified network environment named "Magellan," that provides Virtual Private Network services, WAN Acceleration technology, Voice over IP, and network security.
