SpringSource releases new app server
SpringSource has released the first production version of its Java application server software, called SpringSource dm Server. The open source server enhances the standard application server model in a number of ways, according to the company. For one, it is one of the first app servers to use the OSGi component model, which allows Java programs and components to be dynamically loaded or unloaded. Second, it takes advantage of the company's in-house expertise with Spring, a widely popular platform for building Java Applications.
Rod Johnson, now the CEO of SpringSource,
created Spring as an alternative to Sun Microsystems' JavaBeans. The package includes the Apache Tomcat application server, and the Eclipse development environment for handling modules.
'SpringSource's dm Server presents an immediate alternative to open source application server solutions from larger vendors like Red Hat, IBM and Sun, especially for customers with strong commitments to the Spring Framework,' said Brad Shimmin, Current Analysis application infrastructure principal analyst, in a statement. 'Due to its lightweight, modular kernel, SpringSource's solution will, over the long term, challenge established Java EE vendors in the open source space.'
