According to the Green Electronics Council, the benefits of
using computer products certified as compliant with the Electronic
Product Environmental Assessment Tool are significant. With the
help of the Environmental Protection Agency's Electronics
Environmental Benefits Calculator, the council estimated for every
1,000 EPEAT Silver-rated computers bought and old units
recycled, organizations could:
REDUCE:
- Energy use by 1.2 million kilowatthours, enough to power
101 households each year.
- Greenhouse gas emissions by 90 metric tons of carbon
equivalent, equal to removing 71 passenger cars from the roads per
year.
- Municipal solid wastes by 34.7 metric tons, equivalent
to the waste generated by 18 households annually.
- Hazardous waste by 17 metric tons.
- Toxic materials, including lead and mercury, by 340
pounds.
SAVE:
- $100,000 or more in energy costs during the life cycles
of 1,000 computers.
- $25 to $75 per computer annually if power management
features are enabled.
