Wyse improves virtual desktop PC performance

Wyse has unveiled new thin clients that integrate data, voice and video functionality into a single platform for enterprise users.

The Wyse C class thin clients are small, compact appliances that can fit in the palm of a person’s hand. The thin clients are powered by VIA Technologies C7 1 GHz processor and an advanced hardware graphics accelerator that provides video and multimedia playback, company officials said Aug. 25.

Used in conjunction with Wyse's Collaborative Processing Architecture, the thin clients can work with VMware View 3.1 and Wyse's TCX virtualization software solutions on VMware, Citrix, and Microsoft virtual environments. The Wyse C class also supports Wyse WSM zero-client provisioning software.

Also, the Wyse C class thin clients adhere to the Energy Star version 5.0 specification. Products that earn the Energy Star rating prevent greenhouse gas emissions by meeting strict energy-efficiency guidelines set by the Environmental Protection Agency. The ultra low-power consumption clients draw just under 7 watts of power and generate very little heat, Wyse officials said.

The thin clients are secured with Wyse Device Manager, which provides secure HTTPS-based communications, device policy and configuration management. Other management capabilities include real-time asset management, health-monitoring and remote imaging.

Meanwhile, Wyse also unveiled a new acceleration solution for Adobe Flash as part of its TCX virtualization software suite. The new functionality improves the end user experience on virtual desktops by seamlessly presenting users' animation, online training, YouTube, and video-rich Web sites.

The new Flash acceleration extends the capabilities of the Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol and Citrix Independent Computing Architecture/High Definition protocols for Flash Player 9 and 10 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and 7. The technology is also compatible with VMware View and Citrix XenDesktop connection brokers, using Windows XP Pro, Vista or Windows 7.

Prices start at under $350 for the Wyse C class thin client. The C class will be available in September. Flash acceleration will be available in October for Wyse's V class and R class thin clients with Windows XP Embedded, Windows Embedded Standard 2009, or Wyse ThinOS operating systems and supported PCs.
