Lightweight Portable Security at a glance

2010 GCN AwardsOrganization: Air Force Research Laboratory, Director of Defense Research and Engineering’s Software Protection Initiative.

Project: Lightweight Portable Security.

Challenge: Allow secure access to Defense Department networks in the event that a pandemic or other emergency forced people to work from home.

Solution: Lightweight Portable Security, which provides trusted endpoints for remotely accessing DOD IT resources from untrusted environments, which enables secure Internet browsing and telework on sensitive systems.

Impact: LPS-Remote Access has since been adopted by more than 30 DOD organizations with more than 58,000 employees. More than 35,500 licenses of the free, publicly available LPS-Public have been downloaded.

Cost: Developed by the lab using open-source software.
