Some Internet security service providers are warning of a potential spam fiasco in the migration to IPv6, according to a report in the (U.K.) Register.
The new IPv6 protocol, which will expand the number of new Internet domains, will also make it more difficult to filter out spam, according to the report. That's because cyber address space will be buoyed to the point where keeping databases free of junk mail will become problematic, according to the story.
The routine process of stopping spam by gathering bad IP addresses and blocking them will no longer be possible with IPv6 unless new approaches are to solve the problem are developed, the article reported. At the same time, IPv6 will make it more difficult – and less rewarding – for hackers to mount security attacks.
