When looking for products, think small

When faced with the need to replace a brand-name antivirus product that was not cutting the mustard, IT specialist John Allen at the Washington state Ecology Department decided to look off the beaten path and liked what he found.
“Don’t be afraid of using a smaller vendor,” he said.
Upgrade antivirus, consolidate servers — and scan often
Allen initially settled on the threat scanning tool CounterSpy from Sunbelt Software. CounterSpy since has been replaced by Vipre Antivirus and Sunbelt has been acquired by GFI Software, which focuses on protection for small and medium-sized enterprises.
“Some people are really stuck on the large names,” he said. “Some of the less-well-known companies are doing a good job, and they’re probably working harder.”
Allen said he not only likes the product but has been impressed with the Sunbelt-GFI team, which has been easy to reach and responsive to his problem and has a “great tech staff.”
That does not mean that smaller is always better, however.
“Don’t take my word for it,” he said. “You have to put them to the test,” whomever you select to work with.
