Survey: Nearly half of federal IT staffers use mobile for work

Almost half of federal workers are using mobile devices for work purposes every day, according to a recent survey, which concluded that mobile devices will “become the norm” in federal offices in 2012, InformationWeek reported.

Research firm Fabrizio, Ward & Associates found that 45 percent of federal IT employees said they were using mobile devices at work every day, mainly for e-mail. Project management was the second most popular mobile application, followed by social media.

Those surveyed also said two-thirds of their non-IT colleagues in government are using mobile devices at work each day.

“We believe that 2012 will be the year that mobile devices become the norm and not the exception at government agencies for work purposes,” according to the survey, which was conducted for BlueText, a communications firm based in Washington, D.C.

The survey coincides with the release this week of a draft federal mobility strategy by federal CIO Steven VanRoekel. The draft itself is using social media to ask for comments from the public on what should be included in the strategy.

The BlueText survey also found 68 percent of its respondents said they are using Facebook on their mobile devices for work; 21 percent use Twitter; 16 percent are using Google+; and 11 percent use LinkedIn, all via mobile devices for work.

What the study does not address is that in most cases where mobile technology is making agencies more effecient it is because the employees are doing it out of their own pocket and in some cases in violation of agency policy. To make it worse, the White House issued guidance requiring the agencies to DECREASE, not increase, the number of mobile devices in use.

Mobile devices are essential in the day to day operation of the Department of Labor Agency where I'm employed. However, the agency doesn't pay for this service. Leaving it to the employee. Only top management is authorized. However on several occassions, if it wasn't for the Blackberry that I carry, critical information wouldn't have been received in a timely manner.
