Air Force strikes deal for 18,000 iPads

The Air Force plans to replace paper flight manuals and navigation charts with Apple iPad 2s.

The service’s Air Mobility Command recently gave a $9.3 million contract to Executive Technology of Phoenix to buy as many as 18,000 iPads, Bloomberg reported. The iPads will be sold to the Air Force at a discount price of about $520 each.

The contract allows for up to 18,000 of the devices, although whether the Air Force actually buys that many depends on funding allocations, Bloomberg reported.

The deal marks one of the biggest tablet buys to date for the military, which is steadily moving toward greater use of wireless, mobile devices.
