Good Vault wears iPhone security on its sleeve

This article has been updated to include Precise Biometric's Tactivo.

Mobile device management is an ever-growing concern in the public-sector IT world. Making sure everyone has access to the right apps and documents is no small task. Of course, identity and access management is just as important. Multi-factor authentication, whether using smart cards or biometrics, is essential for agencies. Unfortunately, combining the two into a single sign-on hasn’t always been easy or elegant.

Good Technology Corp. has a potential solution for iPhones with Good Vault, software that works with Precise Biometrics’ Tactivo, a smart casing with an embedded fingerprint and smart card reader. It works with any iPhone 4 or 4s, and comes in the form of a sleeve that slides onto the phone and has either a smart card reader or a microSD reader built in. The sleeve adds only a half-inch in length, 0.16 inches in width and 0.22 inches in thickness, and weighs 1.5 ounces. It allows the device to log into the Good Trust platform and through it to the network’s native authentication service, such as Active Directory. Precise Biometrics also makes Tactivo for iPads.

The Good Trust platform also permits enterprises to create apps that set policies for document use and even to use Good Vault to control building access through the smart phones.

This is an area of network security that has been getting an increasing amount of attention, as more and more agencies adopt BYOD strategies. The platform will let an agency adapt an existing physical authentication system (such as smart cards) to the task of managing its mobile devices.

The company says it is planning to release versions of Good Vault for other mobile devices, as well as accessories for biometric authentication. More information is available on the company's website.
