Gates puts the squeeze on DoD overhead

In a major move this week, Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced a range of proposed cost-cutting measures that included hiring freezes, cuts to executive ranks, and even the possible elimination of the U.S. Joint Forces Command in Norfolk, Va.

Gates also announced he would cut funding for support contractor personnel by 10 percent a year for the next three years.

The secretary claimed the moves, among other things, would help remove superfluous levels of bureaucracy, eliminate redundancies, increase efficiencies and ultimately save billions of dollars on DoD’s overhead expenses.

Gates also took particular aim at DoD’s current decentralized IT infrastructure, which he said “results in large cumulative costs, and a patchwork of capabilities that create cyber vulnerabilities and limit our ability to capitalize on the promise of information technology.”

Many of the proposed changes drew immediate barbs, especially from lawmakers in Virginia, where many of the effects of the cuts would be felt.

Sen. Mark Warner (D), for example, said he could see “no rational basis” for dismantling the Joint Forces Command “since its sole mission is to look for efficiencies and greater cost-savings …”

The proposed changes—whether freezes, cuts, consolidations, downsizing, or contractor cutbacks—will touch a lot of feds. And while new efficiencies often look good on paper, they often mean that the same work has to be done with fewer resources.

What about all the unecessary travel costs to attend seminars, conferences, training (that has no merit) etc....if someone took the time to analyze that little piece of the pie I'm sure a 5th grader could figure out millions are wasted every year on bogus trips!! Another interesting SNAFU in the DoD...centralized Human Resources Center's what a waste of money and manpower!!! Hmmmmmm...wonder how much money would be saved if you return the HR operations to where they belong, back at installation level!!! So many layers to look at but you never hear about those layers underneat...just cut personnel!

Our generals in the Middle East say they are short-handed yet in my squadron we have 18 military and presently zero are deployed. Most are just sitting around in "training." Get them doing something!

If Gates wants to save money he should start by not requiring Civilian who work for the National Guard to wear military uniforms while performing their Civilian work during the week....ain't nothing but lip service...he is only doing little to save and not looking under every rock....

Deep cuts can be made at DFAS. I see GS 11 & GS 12's in Columbus with nothing to do. Many share jobs. There are people who no one knows what they do on a daily basis. There are to many Lim's being brought in with nothing to do. Cuts can be made. Most people who actually work could tell Gates where the waste is. Historically, no one cares or is willing to listen to the people who actually work and know exactly what is going on in these agency's.
