BlackBerry 10 earns FIPS certification prior to release
Research in Motion has announced that its upcoming BlackBerry 10 platform is now FIPS 140-2 certified.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology issues FIPS 140 certifications for certain levels of cryptographic encryption. The AES 256-bit encryption of the BlackBerry 10 was strong enough to garner high marks and easily earn Level 1 certification, designated for software.
The certification also applies to the operating system of the new version of BlackBerry Enterprise Server, which is due out at the same time as the BlackBerry 10.
In the government arena, security has always been BlackBerry’s strong suit. The fact that RIM managed to get the certification prior to the release in the first quarter of 2013 is a first for Blackberry devices and a sign that the firm recognizes that every single link in the security chain must be as strong as possible.
