BizCard Reader

Keeping track of business cards is tough, particularly on the road. The Presto BizCard Reader by NewSoft America Inc. of Fremont, Calif., can help organize your contacts quickly and easily.

It's literally a portable scanner with a feed port wide enough for a business card. To use it, simply slide the card in from the top and push the only button on the scanner. Processing takes a little over two seconds. The scanner then transfers the data to the Presto BizCard 4.0 software that organizes and houses the data.

The BizCard Reader also comes with Adobe Acrobat'so the card's information can be converted to a Portable Document Format file'as well as the driver file for the scanner and component software for Microsoft Windows CE devices.

I was able to get the card reader installed and working on my notebook PC in 10 minutes. This includes the calibration phase, where you scan a calibration card that comes with the package.

The software is intuitive and easy to learn. The processed business cards are stored alphabetically on the right side of the program window. On the left, a virtual Rolodex-like file shows you a representation of the card'so, if you wrote any additional information on a card, it's visible on the Rolodex side.

The scanning engine and NewSoft reader software automatically place all the data under the appropriate categories, such as name, address and e-mail. The software also lets you view all your cards in one of four views. The view with the card file is called the deck view. The edit view resembles a FileMaker database with the fields on the left side of the window and the topical view of the card on the right.

The list categorizes the contacts from top to bottom like a grocery list, and the album view, which is my favorite, places six cards symmetrically in the center of the screen, like a photo album.

Priced at $130, the BizCard is a little expensive, but worth it if you receive as many cards as I do.
