Treasury calls AT&T to build its next-gen net

The Treasury Department has awarded AT&T Corp. a $1 billion contract for its next-generation enterprise network.

AT&T will provide a single, departmentwide network including technology, support and management to serve tens of thousands of users at 1,000 locations.

The indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity Treasury Communications Enterprise contract will have a three-year base plus seven one-year options.

AT&T will provide a secure high-speed virtual private network for data, voice and video.

With a common Web interface, Treasury users will be able to tap into online ordering, billing, help desk support and network performance data.

'TCE will unbundle costs; bureaus will purchase only the services they require,' a Treasury spokeswoman said. The contract will save money by shifting price and performance risk to the vendor and by reducing overhead costs, she said.
