Packeteer Inc. of Cupertino, Calif., is pushing the high end of its application traffic management tools with the PacketShaper 10000, a full-duplex 1-Gbps box targeted at large enterprises, such as government installations, and service providers.
'There is a need for better application performance at the edge,' driving demand for the high-performance product, said product manager Steve House.
This, in turn, is driven by the move to Web-based applications. Putting applications on the Web eliminates the need to manage them on the desktop but requires more bandwidth.
'Web-based applications tend to consume five to 10 times the bandwidth of the application they are replacing,' House said.
Performance of existing network links is enhanced through compression, acceleration and management of application traffic.
PacketShaper provides visibility into network traffic, collecting more than 100 metrics on the nature of the traffic and bandwidth consumption for each application. Historical reporting can be used for trend analysis and capacity planning, and real-time alerts and automated responses can be used to deal with malicious or other abnormal traffic.
The 10000 series can handle up to 1.4 million concurrent traffic flows, which will accommodate all but the very largest enterprises. But organizations with more than 1,000 remote sites might require more than one box to manage the traffic.
Pricing for the PacketShaper 10000 starts at $36,000.
