President Bush has announced his intention to fill a number of high-level Defense Department posts.
Bush has named Maj. Gen. Charles Croom Jr.
to head the Defense Information Systems Agency. He would succeed Air Force Lt. Gen. Harry Raduege
, who is scheduled to retire Sept. 1.
Since August 2002, Croom has served as director of command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance infostructure and deputy chief of staff for warfighting integration at Air Force headquarters. He previously served as vice director for C4 on the Joint Staff and as director of C3 for the European Command.
Meanwhile, Bush said he plans to nominate Navy secretary Gordon England
to fill the deputy secretary of Defense post when Paul Wolfowitz
takes over as head of the World Bank.
England, who is from Texas, served as Navy secretary from 2001 to 2003, before a brief appointment as deputy secretary of Homeland Security from January 2003 to September 2003. He then returned to the Navy in his old position as secretary.
And Kenneth J. Krieg
, Defense director for program analysis and evaluation, has been tapped by Bush to serve as undersecretary of Defense for acquisition, technology and logistics. Michael Wynne
is the current undersecretary, having received a recess appointment when the position became vacant.
In news apart from nominations, Betsy Appleby
, DOD's former Net-Centric Enterprise Services program director, has left government to head up strategic programs for the public sector at Akamai Technologies Inc. of Cambridge, Mass.
Earlier this year, Appleby was reassigned from the NCES program to the Strategic Planning and Information Directorate at the Defense Information Systems Agency.Mark J. Emery
, former deputy CIO of the Homeland Security Department, has joined PEC Solutions Inc. of Fairfax, Va., as vice president of the Managed Services Division.
Before becoming DHS' deputy CIO, Emery worked for the Transportation Security Agency as deputy CIO and as an executive at Bell Atlantic.
