Navy gives Godwin additional NMCI oversight responsibilities

The Navy's assistant secretary for research, development and acquisition has named Rear Adm. James Godwin the direct-reporting program manager for Navy-Marine Corps Intranet.

Under the new structure, Godwin will work with Space and Naval Warfare Command and the Marine Corps Systems Command to 'propose appropriate restructuring of the two current NMCI program offices,' according to the memo signed on May 6 by John Young.

Godwin, formerly the NMCI director, also will work with the program executive officer for IT to review programs and propose realignments on initiatives such as server consolidation and legacy network reduction for systems that touch NMCI.

The move is designed to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of Navy and Marine Corps business IT.

NMCI will link roughly 411,000 sailors and Marines at 300 shore sites via a common voice, video and data portal.
