Montana re-ups NIC for portal services

Montana has awarded a five-year contract extension to a subsidiary of NIC Inc. to continue managing e-government services for the Treasure State.
The Helena, Mont.-based company was hired by the state in 2001 to create and manage e-government services on its Web site. The new contract is worth about $5 million, said Chris Neff, an NIC spokesman.
Montana Interactive and NIC teamed up to create an application to use the state's Web portal to search for convicted offenders. The two companies also created an application that verifies voters through an online service that lets them cast their votes without bringing their identification to the polls, as required by the Help America Vote Act.
The state's Web site offers a host of e-government applications, including registration for hunting and fishing licenses, business annual report filings, unemployment insurance claims and temporary vehicle registration permits.
More than 1.4 million visitors accessed e-government through the state's Web site in 2005, NIC said.
