In addition to its new
Sun Fire X4500 data server,
Sun Microsystems this month introduced the
Sun Blade 8000 Modular System, which can handle up to 10 four-socket blades with dual-core AMD Opteron processors. The company also rolled out the
Sun Fire X4600, a four-way Opteron server that Sun says can expand to 16-way in a 4U form factor. At the launch, when asked why Sun wasn't using dual-core Intel Xeon CPUs in its new products, officials said they were happy with Opteron'it's easier to implement in these configurations, offers great scalability and better input/output, they said.
