Commerce names deputy CIO

The Commerce Department has selected John McManus as its deputy CIO and chief technology officer (CTO). McManus starts Nov. 13, said Commerce CIO Barry West in a message to staff.

Currently, McManus is acting CIO and CTO at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. He also is the co-chairman of the federal CIO Council's IPv6 Working Group.

Prior to being appointed the deputy CIO and CTO at NASA in 2003, he was vice president of the Software Technology Center at Lucent Technologies, Bell Labs in Murray Hill, N.J.

McManus earned his master's degree and doctorate in computer science from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., and his bachelor's degree from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va.
