The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has selected a data management tool from Memex Inc. that will automate intelligence and case management functions for seven law enforcement agencies in the state.

The Memex solution will enable the agencies to manage and retrieve intelligence and efficiently predict, prevent and respond to threats in real-time via software, workflow management, multi-level security and an information-sharing platform. Law enforcement can use the system to uncover unexpected facts and connect patterns between people and events, including accessing unstructured data such as e-mail attachments.

'We required a system that could help us improve our decision-making capabilities and operational effectiveness,' said Don Robertson, GBI project administrator. 'We also manage vast amounts of data across multiple systems, so breaking down barriers to real-time data sharing is of paramount importance.'

The seven Georgia law enforcement agencies deploying the Memex tool include: the Albany, Cobb County, Columbus, and Gwinnett County police departments, and the Bibb County, Lowndes County, and Richmond County sheriff's offices.

Memex will provide a foundation for the agencies to participate in the Georgia Terrorism Intelligence Project (GTIP), an intelligence-sharing initiative among state and local law enforcement agencies, and the Georgia Information Sharing and Analysis Center, which is the state's Homeland Security Fusion Center.

GBI is an independent, statewide agency that provides assistance to the state's criminal justice system in the areas of criminal investigations, forensic laboratory services and computerized criminal justice information.
